Small Talk Cheat Sheet

Goal: find one shared thread, give it a little room, and leave the other person feeling heard. You do not need to be dazzling.

The four-move loop

  1. Notice: name something genuinely available.
  2. Ask: use one light question that follows their detail.
  3. React: acknowledge what they said.
  4. Offer: add one related piece of yourself, then return the thread if it has energy.

Small offers about yourself

Keep your contribution short and connected. “I have been getting into that too,” “I usually come here after work,” or “I am still figuring that out myself” gives the other person a handle without taking over.
